We're often asked if an IP address can be used in an SSL certificate in place of a fully qualified domain name. The short answer is yes, but we don't recommend it.

SSL/TLS doesn't hide the source and the destination IP addresses. It is impossible (at least, with a purely ssl/tls solution), because the src/dst addresses must be valid to a working tcp connection. The name of the connected website, is hidden by default - or, at least, it was until the last some years.

While HTTPS encrypts the entire HTTP request and response, the DNS resolution and connection setup can reveal other information, such as the full domain or subdomain and the originating IP address, as shown above. Additionally, attackers can still analyze encrypted HTTPS traffic for “side channel” information.

So, Are HTTPS URLS Encrypted? Yes, the full URL string is hidden, and all further communication, including the application-specific parameters. However, the Server Name Indicator that is formed from the hostname and domain name part of the URL is sent in clear text during the first part of the TLS negotiation.
